Active Projects

  • Big Mountain Rd. West - Refuse Removal

In May 2024, SCRA was awarded our second BIL grant. This grant provides $367,361 for reclamation design and permitting to remove a large refuse pile, Abandoned Mine Land Feature 08 in Problem Area 1605. The project site is located to the west of Big Mountain Road and encompasses three land parcels located in Coal Township, Northumberland County.

The project design will include mitigating the coal refuse pile by recontouring and covering the refuse to reduce runoff and minimize environmental impacts and revegetation of the project site after construction.

  • Quaker Run Restoration

In early 2024, SCRA was awarded $422,320 through a BIL grant for a project to reclaim one (1) AML feature, remove existing box culverts, address stream impacts from mine subsidence, and restore the stream.

This grant will fund the design and construction of the reclamation of an AML feature, reestablishment of stream channels, and seal stream bottoms to minimize the infiltration of streamflow underground. At the conclusion of this grant it is expected that the work done by Shamokin Creek Restoration Alliance will return Quaker Run to a healthy functioning stream.

  • Watershed Assessment

In 2022, SCRA was awarded a $200,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) for a full watershed assessment. The project includes a review of past reports and available information, GIS mapping, water quality & flow measurements, stream flow loss & mine opening field review, watershed model, mine pool review, and preparing a Conceptual Restoration Plan for the Shamokin Creek Watershed.

PA Department of Environmental Protection will be conducting the laboratory analysis on the AMD discharge and stream samples collected as part of this investigation.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation (EPCAMR) will be conducting monthly field visits to the Shamokin Creek and its tributaries to collect water samples and measure flow.

The Northumberland County Conservation District (NCCD) will be assisting with the monthly field visits to the Shamokin Creek and its tributaries to collect water samples and measure flow.

The assessment will be completed by June 2025.
